The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has began a training of trainers’ workshop on disaster information management for staff of the Agency in Abuja.

Mustapha Habib Ahmed, the Director General of NEMA, while declaring the workshop open, urged participants to make the best of the opportunity to gain more knowledge and skills for improved job performance. He also said “this workshop represents a significant opportunity for us to enhance our skills and knowledge in managing critical information during times of disaster.”

“Disaster, whether natural or human-induced, presents significant challenges that require a coordinated and effective response. Timely and accurate information is crucial in mitigating the impact of disasters, saving lives and ensuring the well-being of affected communities. As trainers, you play a vital role in equipping responders with necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of disaster information management.”

The DG appreciated the partnership and support of UNOCHA towards the success of the workshop. “your expertise and guidance are invaluable in advancing our collective efforts towards building a more resilient and prepared society.” He said

The head of UNOCHA Office Mr Trond Jensen, in his remark reiterated the commitment of his office to collaborate with NEMA towards supporting improved capacities for disaster management in Nigeria. Mr Jensen who was represented by the UNOCHA Head of Coordination Ms Beatrice Lakot said the UN organization will continue to focus on delivery of its main functions for Nigeria in the areas of advocacy, Coordination, Humanitarian Financing, Information Management and Policy.
