The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) is set to partner with the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Abuja Chapter, on a range of initiatives aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and environmental resilience in the FCT.
The Acting Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, made this known while hosting executive members of the NIEE in his office in Abuja. In an official statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs at FEMD, Nkechi Isa, the Ag. DG disclosed that the department was eager to collaborate with the engineers’ body in technical knowledge exchange, advocacy campaigns, community outreach, and capacity development programmes.
According to Engr. Abdulrahman, the department is particularly interested in aligning with NIEE’s efforts to address critical challenges such as urban flooding, building collapses, and environmental degradation.
“We are interested in your tree planting programme, so that we can institute some trees in FEMD’s name,” he added, indicating FEMD’s readiness to support greening efforts as part of broader climate action and disaster mitigation strategies.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of NIEE Abuja Chapter, Engr. Uche Patrick-Obikile, noted that both environmental engineers and emergency responders share a unified goal, to build more resilient communities and reduce vulnerabilities to environmental hazards.
“Together we can explore strategies to mitigate urban flooding, promote climate change adaptation, and strengthen risk management infrastructure across the FCT,” she said, stressing the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in addressing environmental threats.
The meeting laid the foundation for a strategic partnership that would see both organizations working jointly on training programmes, technical innovation, and the promotion of sustainable environmental practices within the FCT.
In a related development, Engr. Abdulrahman also received in his office a delegation from Mai Jagora Peace and Development Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization, led by its Executive Director, Muntasir Jibrin Mohammed. While details of their discussions were not disclosed, the visit signifies FEMD’s increasing engagement with civil society groups in its quest to build an inclusive, multi-stakeholder emergency management framework.
The renewed collaborations underscore FEMD’s proactive approach to disaster prevention and its commitment to partnerships that enhance safety, preparedness, and environmental stewardship across the territory.
