Young Nigerians in the Diaspora sent a powerful message of renewed commitment to cultural identity, reconnection with the homeland, and global collaboration during the Homestrings panel session at the 2025 National Diaspora Day (NDD) celebrations held in Abuja.
In an official statement issued by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media and Public Relations at the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the panel moderated by Ms. Aisha Dankano provided a vibrant platform for second and third generation Diaspora Nigerians to share personal narratives and strategies for strengthening ties with Nigeria. Discussions centered on themes such as identity, cultural belonging, and the desire to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Renowned travel content creator and world record holder, Pelumi Nubi, headlined the event with an inspiring recount of her solo journey driving across 17 countries, 14 of them in Africa, from London to Lagos. “Every mile I drove was a reminder that no matter how far we go, Nigeria is always within reach, through our passion, our resilience, and our roots,” Nubi said. “And as we know, Naija no dey carry last.”
She emphasized courage as an intrinsic Nigerian trait, particularly urging young women to pursue their dreams boldly and without compromise. Nubi also announced her upcoming initiative, The Women Empower Initiative, designed to inspire and equip women to break boundaries and embrace bold aspirations.
Other discussants, including Nduka Eze, Ayomide Sanwo-Olu, and Suraya Ahmed, brought varied perspectives rooted in business, education, and cultural diplomacy. They underscored the need to build strategic platforms for the younger generation in the Diaspora to remain connected to Nigeria, adding that sustained engagement would strengthen national cohesion and development.
The session opened with an expressive cultural performance by Kleopatra Vargas, a cultural advocate of Nigerian-Caribbean descent, whose spirited dance set a celebratory and proud tone for the entire segment.
The Homestrings initiative, developed by NiDCOM, is dedicated to exploring the lived experiences, evolving identities, and civic responsibilities of second and third generation Nigerians in the Diaspora. It serves as a bridge to reconnect young Nigerians abroad with their heritage, and provides avenues for them to participate meaningfully in the nation’s socio-economic progress.
