In a high-profile event that attracted top government officials and stakeholders across Nigeria, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday commissioned the New Edo Line Transport Service, marking a major step toward revitalizing the state’s public transportation system. The commissioning ceremony, held in Benin City, drew the presence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who served as Guest of Honour, as well as former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, Fred Itua, the newly relaunched Edo Line was celebrated as a milestone achievement by the Okpebholo administration, coming just eight months into his tenure. The initiative was praised as a solution to both insecurity and transportation challenges faced by students, traders, and travelers across the state.
Speaking at the event, Minister Nyesom Wike expressed strong support for Governor Okpebholo’s security directives, particularly his insistence that high-profile figures like former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, should notify state authorities before any visit. Wike backed the governor’s stance, describing it as a necessary measure in a country grappling with complex security dynamics.
“When Mr. Obi visited me while I was Governor of Rivers State, he secured a permit before embarking on that journey,” Wike stated. “I don’t understand why the same protocol was not observed when he came to Edo. This is about security, not politics. The governor is the Chief Security Officer of the state and must be informed.”
Wike also commended Governor Okpebholo’s swift and focused approach to governance. “In just eight months, he has done so much for Edo people. He refused to be distracted and hit the ground running, just like President Bola Tinubu did when he assumed office. Even if the Supreme Court had ruled against him, it would still have been evident that he came to serve. His performance shows he means well for the people of Edo State.”
Governor Okpebholo, in his address, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the support his administration continues to receive, which he said is translating into tangible development in Edo State. He reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing impactful projects that improve the lives of citizens and strengthen the state’s infrastructure.
Addressing recent controversies, the governor clarified his earlier comments on Peter Obi, insisting that his message was not a threat but a sincere security advisory. “What I said was advice, not a threat. Do not come to Edo without informing me. I am here to work and also to protect both Edo people and visitors to the state,” he said.
Recalling a personal experience, Governor Okpebholo noted: “I remember when I came into Edo during Obaseki’s administration. The Commissioner of Police asked me to remain at the Benin Airport, and one of my security men was shot dead right in my presence. I had a security report then. That is why I advised Mr. Obi to always inform me when coming to Edo. If he likes, he can take the advice.”
Reiterating his gratitude to President Tinubu, Okpebholo pledged overwhelming support from Edo in the 2027 elections. “I assure Mr. President that Edo State will give him 2.5 million votes in 2027 to secure a second term and continue his good work.”
Among the dignitaries at the commissioning were Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Umar Musa Ikhilor; Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Gani Audu; former Deputy Governors Pius Odubu and Lucky Imasuen; retired General Cecil Esekhaigbe; APC chieftain Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu; market leaders, transport stakeholders, youth groups, and representatives of various security agencies.
