The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, fnim, CON, has urged Nigerians to reflect on the enduring legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing him as a leader whose life and service were defined by discipline, conviction, and patriotism.

Senator Akume made this call on Sunday, July 20, 2025, during the National Church Service held in honour of the late President, as part of a series of national mourning activities.

In an official statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the SGF hailed the former President’s contributions to national development, highlighting his role in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, promoting social protection programmes, and delivering critical institutional reforms.

“Though not perfect, he fought a good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith,” Akume declared during the solemn gathering. “His legacy in national security, social protection, and institutional reforms – including the Petroleum Industry Act – will remain part of Nigeria’s development history.”

Akume particularly praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for renaming the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late leader. The institution is now to be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, a move the SGF said was “not merely symbolic, but a bold reminder to future generations to lead with courage and sacrifice.”

According to him, the renaming honours President Buhari’s contributions, especially in the face of insurgency in the North-East and his determination to expand educational access in the region.

“This gesture is about inspiring young Nigerians to embrace integrity, duty, and nation-building – values that the late President embodied in his public life,” Akume added.

The memorial church service was well attended by dignitaries including the Representative of the President of the Senate and Deputy Senate Majority Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi; members of the National Assembly, serving ministers, former Secretaries to the Government of the Federation, retired Permanent Secretaries, and top government officials.
