The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a visionary and dedicated leader whose contributions to regional peace and development remain enduring.
In a condolence message issued on behalf of the two regional bodies, the Executive Secretary of LCBC and Head of Mission, MNJTF, Ambassador Mamman Nuhu, extended heartfelt sympathy to the Government and people of Nigeria, as well as the family of the late former president. The message was made public through an official statement signed by the Chief Military Public Information Officer of the MNJTF, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba.
Ambassador Nuhu described former President Buhari as “a visionary leader whose unwavering commitment to regional integration, security, and development left an indelible mark on the Lake Chad Basin region.” He noted that Buhari’s steadfast support was instrumental in the revitalization of the MNJTF and in reinforcing the collective fight against Boko Haram and other terrorist threats that have plagued the region for years.
According to the LCBC chief, Buhari’s tenure saw renewed momentum in regional military cooperation and a concerted push toward fostering peace and stability for the millions of people living in the Lake Chad Basin. He credited the late Nigerian leader for playing a pivotal role in strengthening multilateral efforts to secure the region from violent extremism.
Ambassador Nuhu also highlighted former President Buhari’s commitment to environmental and humanitarian concerns, particularly his advocacy for the restoration of the shrinking Lake Chad. He noted that Buhari’s consistent call for international solidarity and support to revitalize the lake demonstrated his deep dedication to improving livelihoods and building a resilient future for the communities dependent on the basin.
“President Buhari was a statesman whose legacy of leadership and peacebuilding will continue to inspire not just Nigeria but the entire Lake Chad Basin region,” Ambassador Nuhu stated, adding that the former president’s notable contributions to regional cooperation and security would remain a cornerstone for shared progress among member states.
“In this moment of grief,” he continued, “the LCBC and MNJTF join the people of Nigeria in honoring the memory of a distinguished leader.”
