The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the United Kingdom.
In a statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the OSGF, the SGF, speaking on behalf of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), described the late President Buhari as a true patriot, statesman, and disciplined leader who served Nigeria with honour and integrity.
Senator Akume highlighted Buhari’s enduring legacy, noting that his leadership both as a military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023 was marked by an unwavering commitment to national unity, a resolute fight against corruption, and a deep sense of duty to the Nigerian people.
“President Buhari led with calm strength, moral clarity, and unmatched devotion to the Nigerian project,” the SGF stated. “His vision for a better, safer, and more transparent Nigeria inspired millions across the country and beyond, as well as posterity.”
In honour of the late leader’s memory, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast across the country for seven days, beginning Sunday, July 13, 2025. Additionally, the President has summoned an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council for Tuesday, where members will pay tribute to the former President and reflect on his service to the nation.
On behalf of the Federal Executive Council, Senator Akume extended heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the entire Buhari family, as well as the government and people of Katsina State. He also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the former President’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to grant him Al-jannah Firdaus.
