In a major step towards enhancing national emergency preparedness ahead of the 2025 flood season, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulances to several of its operational offices across the country.
The deployment, approved by NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, follows a nationwide assessment that identified critical equipment gaps in some field locations. The initiative is part of the agency’s broader strategy to strengthen sub-national emergency response capabilities and save lives in the wake of increasing climate-related disasters.
According to Mrs. Umar, the deployment of the MICU ambulances marks a strategic boost to NEMA’s zonal directorates and operational offices. “With the increasing risk of climate-induced disasters, particularly flooding, it is imperative that our teams are well-equipped to provide immediate and effective life-saving interventions,” she said.
The MICU ambulances are outfitted with advanced emergency medical tools, including oxygen supply systems, patient monitoring devices, suction kits, and other critical life-support equipment. These features make them suitable for stabilizing victims in transit, greatly improving the chances of survival in high-risk situations.
Based on vulnerability mapping and logistical priorities, the ambulances have been dispatched to NEMA operational offices in Kaduna, Owerri, and Uyo locations identified as particularly susceptible to flooding and other natural hazards.
This initiative forms part of NEMA’s wider commitment to building a resilient and responsive disaster management system nationwide. With meteorological forecasts warning of potential severe flooding in several Nigerian states, the agency has ramped up its preparations by enhancing infrastructure, promoting community-based awareness, and coordinating closely with other emergency stakeholders.
In addition to the deployment of MICU ambulances, NEMA is also conducting flood simulation drills, public sensitization campaigns, and inter-agency coordination meetings aimed at reducing disaster risks and improving national response readiness.
The latest intervention underscores the urgency of NEMA’s proactive approach and its determination to minimize loss of life and property as Nigeria confronts the growing realities of climate change and environmental vulnerability.
