The Nigerian Army has issued a firm warning to residents of Oghede, Iyanomo, and other adjoining communities in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State to desist from further encroachment on lands legally belonging to the military at the Ekehuan Cantonment in Benin City.

In a strongly worded statement released on Friday, 20th June 2025, the Headquarters of 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Benin, expressed serious concern over the persistent land-grabbing activities allegedly spearheaded by some community leaders, including the traditional ruler of Oghede, His Royal Highness King Osazebare Aghahowa.

The statement, signed by Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade, Lieutenant Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, accused the Enogie of openly encouraging illegal occupation and sale of military land to private developers, hotel owners, and estate agents, actions the Army says directly violate prior agreements and pose grave risks to public safety.

According to the Army, despite earlier goodwill efforts to resolve the issue through peaceful dialogue and an out-of-court settlement, community leaders have continued to flout the terms of the resolution, which had directed all parties to maintain the status quo. The Brigade noted that some of the illegally sold lands fall within restricted zones, including areas reserved for live-firing exercises, thereby putting lives at risk.

The military disclosed that the disputed land was lawfully acquired and surveyed in 1966, with a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O No. 11751) issued on April 26, 1994, under the authority of the Edo State Government.

The Army further revealed that in a recent development, the Enogie allegedly forged a document purporting that the Nigerian Army had relinquished its rights over the land, an act the military described as fraudulent and deceptive.

In response to these ongoing violations, the Nigerian Army has warned that it may soon embark on the demolition of illegal structures within the Ekehuan barracks area. It reiterated that it will not hesitate to take decisive actions to protect its property and secure its operational environment.

While reaffirming its commitment to peace, safety, and security in Edo State, the 4 Brigade stressed that it will not be blackmailed or distracted by misinformation campaigns orchestrated by individuals seeking personal gain at the expense of national interest.
